Melasma Treatment in Oak Lawn, IL

Even tone, the gentle way.

Melasma treatment that starts gentle. Patchy brown color comes back easily, so a slow plan and daily sun care tend to work better than one strong treatment.

What is melasma, and what causes it?

Melasma shows up as larger brown or gray-brown patches. They often sit on both cheeks, the forehead, the upper lip or the chin. It is far more common in women.

Hormones set it off. Pregnancy, birth control pills and hormone therapy are common triggers. Sun, bright light and heat make it darker. Medium and darker skin tones get it more often.

When to see a dermatologist about melasma

Melasma can look like other pigment problems. If the patches came on suddenly, itch or keep spreading, have a dermatologist confirm it first.

A dermatologist can also prescribe creams for melasma. Peels and facials here can work alongside them. Bring a list of what you use.

Why melasma needs a gentle plan

The color cells in melasma overreact. Strong peels, heat and hard scrubbing can inflame the skin. Inflamed skin often makes more color, so the patches end up darker.

So your provider starts light, watches how your skin responds for a few weeks, and only then steps up. Lasers and BBL are used with great care, if at all. Your provider decides at the consult.

What a melasma plan looks like

  1. 1
    Skin check

Your provider looks at the pattern and asks about pregnancy, birth control and sun habits.

  2. 2
    Start light

Gentle peels or facials every few weeks, with sunscreen every day.

  3. 3
    Step up slowly

A stronger peel, only if your skin handled the light ones well.

  4. 4
    Keep it even

Upkeep visits, often around summer, when melasma tends to darken.

Sun care is part of melasma treatment

  • Sunscreen every day, SPF 30 or higher. A tinted mineral sunscreen also blocks some visible light.
  • Put it on again when you are outdoors.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat in strong sun.
  • Notice heat. Saunas and hot workouts can darken patches for some people.

Consult first. Walk-ins welcome.

Questions

Melasma questions

Can melasma be cured?

Melasma can fade a lot with treatment, but it tends to come back with sun, heat or hormone changes. Most people manage it over time, with upkeep visits and daily sun care.

What is the difference between melasma and sun spots?

Sun spots are small, separate spots from years of sun. Melasma is larger, blotchy patches linked to hormones, sun and heat. Melasma needs a gentler plan, because some treatments can make it darker.

What is a melasma facial?

A facial planned around melasma: gentle exfoliation, no heat and no hard scrubbing. A HydraFacial or a gentle facial can fill this role between peels.

Can lasers make melasma worse?

They can. Heat and strong light can inflame the skin and darken melasma. That is why your provider usually starts with gentle peels and facials and watches how your skin responds.

Why does melasma get worse in summer?

Sun, bright light and heat all push the skin to make more color, and summer brings more of all three. Daily mineral sunscreen, a hat and shade help.

Can I treat melasma while pregnant?

Melasma often starts in pregnancy, and some of it fades after the baby arrives. Many peels and skin care acids are avoided while pregnant or breastfeeding. Sun care and gentle facials are the usual plan until then.

How much does melasma treatment cost?

Most melasma plans take several visits over a few months. The cost depends on the treatments and the number of visits. It is priced at your consult.
