Does lip filler hurt, and will it look natural?

01

Will my lips look natural?

That depends on the amount and where it goes. Bring photos of lips you like, and say how subtle you want to go. Adding a little later is easier than taking filler away.

02

Does lip filler hurt?

Lips are sensitive. Most lip fillers have a numbing medicine mixed into the gel. Most people feel pressure and a few sharp pinches. Ask about numbing at your consult.

03

How much does lip filler cost?

It depends on the product and how much you need. It is priced at your consult.

Lip injections for volume, shape and lines

People book lip filler for three reasons.

You don't need thin lips to get filler. Every option for thin lips is on one page.

  • Thin lips

Lips that almost disappear when you smile. Filler adds volume in an amount that suits your face.

  • Uneven shape

An upper and lower lip that look out of balance. Small amounts where they are needed can even it out.

  • Lines around the mouth

Lipstick that bleeds into fine lines. A soft gel along the lip border can smooth them.

How long does lip filler last?

Most lip filler lasts about six months to a year. Lips move a lot when you talk and eat, so filler there fades sooner than in the cheeks. Softer gels fade sooner too.

The gel breaks down slowly, so there is no sudden change. Many people book a smaller top-up when they see it fading.

Lip filler swelling and aftercare

Your lips look bigger for the first day or two. Swelling and small bruises go down over about a week. The final shape shows at about two weeks. The lip filler swelling guide goes day by day.

  • Hold ice wrapped in a cloth on your lips for short stretches on day one.
  • Skip hard workouts, saunas and hot tubs for a day.
  • Don't press or rub your lips unless your provider tells you to.

Call us right away if you have bad pain, or if the skin on or near your lips turns pale, white or blotchy.

Lip flip or lip filler?

If you mainly want more of your upper lip to show when you smile, ask about a lip flip. It uses a wrinkle relaxer, not filler, and adds no volume. See lip flip vs lip filler, side by side.

Who should wait for lip filler

Tell your provider first, and you may need to wait, if any of these apply:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You get cold sores. You may need medicine from your doctor first.
  • You have a cold sore, pimple or rash on or near your lips.
  • You had dental work in the last two weeks, or have some coming up.
  • You take blood thinners, which make bruising more likely.

Questions

Lip filler questions

How long does lip filler last?

Most lip filler lasts about six months to a year. Softer gels and lips that move a lot fade sooner. Your provider tells you what to expect for the product they use.

How much lip filler should I get the first time?

Many people start with a small amount and add more at a later visit. Starting small shows you how your lips take the gel. Your provider suggests an amount for your lips and the look you want.

Why do my lips look uneven after filler?

In the first days, swelling is often uneven, and lips can feel firm or lumpy. That usually settles over about two weeks. If something still looks off after that, call us.

Can lip filler be dissolved?

Hyaluronic acid filler can be broken down with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. It often works within a day or two. Ask at your consult how a correction would be handled.

Can I get lip filler if I get cold sores?

Tell your provider first. Lip injections can set off a cold sore, so you may need medicine from your doctor before treatment. Don't come in while you have an active cold sore.

Can I get lip filler before a wedding?

Yes, with enough time. Book at least two weeks before the date, so swelling and any bruising can settle. Skip the week of the event.
