Do dermal fillers hurt, and will I look overfilled?
Will I look overfilled?
Not when the amount fits your face. Your provider places small amounts and checks from the front and the side. Adding a little later is easier than taking filler away.
Does filler hurt?
Most people feel pressure and a few pinches. Many fillers have a numbing medicine mixed into the gel. Areas around the mouth feel more than the cheeks.
How much do dermal fillers cost?
It depends on the product, the areas and how much each one needs. It is priced at your consult.

Where dermal fillers go
These are the areas people ask about most. Your provider tells you at the consult which ones suit your face.
Lips have their own page: lip filler. For hollow cheeks and flat contours, see every option for volume loss.
Cheek filler
Cheeks lose volume with age, which can make the face look flatter. A firmer gel along the cheekbone adds back shape.
Smile lines
The folds from the sides of your nose to the corners of your mouth. Filler can soften them. Sometimes a little cheek volume helps the fold more.
Chin and jawline
Filler can add shape to a chin or a jawline that has less definition than you want.
Marionette lines
The lines that run down from the corners of the mouth.
Is under-eye filler right for me?
Under-eye filler fills a hollow, the dip between the lower lid and the cheek. It does not fix puffiness or dark color under the eyes.
The skin there is thin, so not everyone is a good fit. Your provider checks the area and tells you plainly whether filler is the right choice, or whether something else fits better.

How a dermal filler visit works
- 01
Consult
Your provider looks at your face from the front and the side, and asks about your health and medicines.
- 02
Plan
Which product for each area, and how much. Then you decide.
- 03
Injections
Small amounts, checked as they go. Most filler visits are booked for 30 to 40 minutes.
- 04
After
Swelling, tenderness or small bruises for a few days. Most people go back to work the same day.
How long do dermal fillers last?
Most hyaluronic acid fillers last about six months to over a year. Firmer gels in the cheeks tend to last longest. Softer gels in areas that move a lot, like around the mouth, fade sooner. The gel breaks down slowly, so there is no sudden change.

Juvederm, Restylane and other filler brands
Juvederm and Restylane are two well-known filler brands. Both are hyaluronic acid gels. Each maker has softer gels for lips and fine lines, and firmer gels for cheeks and deep folds.
Neither brand is better overall. The better question is which gel fits the area. How long a filler lasts depends more on the product and the area than on the brand.
Many gels have a numbing medicine mixed in. Any hyaluronic acid filler can be broken down with an enzyme if a shape needs fixing.
Your provider names the product they suggest for each area at your consult, so you know what goes in. Ask any question about it then.

Dermal fillers vs Botox
| Question | Dermal fillers | Botox |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A gel under the skin | A prescription wrinkle relaxer |
| Good for | Lost volume and folds that show at rest | Lines that show when you move |
| When you see it | The same day | Over about two weeks |
| How long it lasts | About six months to over a year | About three to four months |
Many people use both, for different areas. See Botox in Oak Lawn. For gradual volume over months, compare Sculptra and filler.
Dermal filler aftercare and downtime
Most people go back to work the same day. Swelling, tenderness or small bruises can last a few days, so don't book right before a big event.
- Skip hard workouts, saunas and hot tubs for a day.
- Don't press or rub the treated areas unless your provider tells you to.
- Ask before a facial or laser on the same area.
Call us right away if you have bad pain, or skin near where filler went in turns pale, white or blotchy.

Questions
Dermal filler questions
How long do dermal fillers last?
Most last about six months to over a year. Firmer gels in the cheeks tend to last longer than softer gels around the mouth. Your provider tells you what to expect for each area.
What is the difference between dermal fillers and Botox?
Filler adds volume under the skin, so it suits hollows and folds that show at rest. Botox relaxes muscles, so it suits lines that show when you move. Some people use both.
Is Juvederm or Restylane better?
Neither brand is better overall. Both are hyaluronic acid fillers, with gels made for lips, lines and cheeks. Your provider picks the product by area and names it at your consult.
What does XC mean in Juvederm names?
XC means the gel has lidocaine, a numbing medicine, mixed in. It takes the edge off as the filler goes in.
Can I switch from one filler brand to another?
Yes. Most fillers are hyaluronic acid, so you can switch. Tell your provider which product you had and when, so they can check what is left.
Can dermal fillers be dissolved?
Hyaluronic acid fillers can be broken down with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. Sculptra is not hyaluronic acid and does not dissolve this way. Ask at your consult how a correction would be handled.
How much filler will I need?
It depends on the area and how much volume has been lost. A fine line may need a small amount, while cheeks often need more. Your provider suggests an amount at the consult.
