How LED light therapy works

LED stands for light-emitting diode. A panel gives off one color of light at a time, and your skin takes it in while you rest. Nothing touches your skin, and there is little or no heat.

Red light is the color used for signs of aging, like fine lines and dull skin. Blue light is the color used on oily skin that breaks out.

LED works as a series, not a single visit. Results build slowly, and they are gentle.

Does LED light therapy hurt, and does it work?

01

Does it hurt?

No. Most people feel nothing, or a little warmth. Your eyes are covered, and you can rest or close your eyes.

02

Does it work?

It is gentle, and results build over a series. It does not replace acne medicine, or treatments that go deeper, like peels or microneedling. Your provider tells you what to expect for your skin.

03

How much does it cost?

It depends on whether you book it on its own or with a facial, and on how many visits you need. It is priced at your visit.

What happens at an LED light therapy visit

  1. 1
    Cleanse

Makeup and sunscreen come off, so the light reaches clean skin.

  2. 2
    Cover your eyes

Eye shields or goggles go on before the light comes on.

  3. 3
    Under the light

You lie back while the panel sits close to your face.

  4. 4
    Back to your day

Moisturizer and sunscreen go on. You can wear makeup right away.

LED light therapy with a facial

LED pairs well with a facial. Blue light after a facial for breakouts, and red light after a facial for dull skin, are common pairings.

Ask the front desk whether LED can be added to your facial, HydraFacial or OxyGeneo facial. Adding it changes the price, so ask when you book.

Who should skip LED light therapy

LED suits most skin types. Tell your provider first, and you may need to skip it, if any of these apply:

  • You take a medicine that makes your skin sensitive to light, like isotretinoin or some antibiotics.
  • You have a condition that light can flare, like lupus, or an eye condition.
  • You are pregnant. Many providers wait, so ask first.
  • You have had seizures triggered by light.

I’ve been going to Magic Femtouch for a couple years and it’s honestly my favorite med spa.

…she and her staff are incredibly professional, friendly, and genuinely care about their clients.

She really is descriptive on how the process works and makes you feel comfortable throughout the whole process.

So clean and professional they’ll tell you what you need and what you don’t need.

Questions

LED light therapy questions

Does LED light therapy hurt?

No. Most people feel nothing, or a gentle warmth. There are no needles and nothing to numb, and you go straight back to your day.

How many LED light therapy sessions will I need?

LED works as a series. A common plan is a visit every week or two for several weeks, then upkeep. Your provider suggests a plan for your skin.

Should I get red or blue LED light?

Red light is used for fine lines and dull skin. Blue light is used for oily, breakout-prone skin. Your provider looks at your skin and picks the color, and some plans use both.

Can I add LED light therapy to a facial?

Ask the front desk when you book. LED is often done at the end of a facial. Adding it changes the price.

Is LED light therapy safe for my eyes?

Your eyes stay covered with shields or goggles the whole time, because the light is bright up close. Tell your provider about any eye condition first.

Is a clinic LED treatment the same as a home LED mask?

They use the same idea. Clinic panels are usually stronger and cover the face evenly. A home mask can help keep up between visits, if you use it often.

What should I do after LED light therapy?

Go back to your day. You can wear makeup right away. Wear sunscreen as usual.

Consult first. Walk-ins welcome.

Ask for an LED light therapy time. The front desk calls or texts you back during opening hours.

“The entire office is always very warm, welcoming, and professional. Everyone is extremely attentive and always answers all of my questions.”
