Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser gives permanent hair reduction, not removal. The laser heats the pigment in the hair root, which slows regrowth. It only works while the hair is growing, so it takes a series.

Most people need 6 to 8 sessions, 4 to 8 weeks apart. Most treated hair does not grow back, and what does is often finer. Some people need a touch-up later, because hormones can start new hair at any age.

Laser works best on dark hair. Blonde, gray, white and red hair usually respond less. See how many laser sessions you need.

Facial hair removal: upper lip, chin and neck

Hair on the upper lip, chin, jawline and neck is one of the most common reasons women start laser. Small face areas take about 10 to 20 minutes.

Face hair can need more sessions than body hair, especially when hormones are involved. Shave between sessions. Do not pluck, wax or thread, because the laser needs the root.

PCOS facial hair and laser

PCOS, or polycystic ovary syndrome, raises the hormones that grow coarse, dark hair. It shows up on the chin, upper lip, neck and chest. Doctors call this hirsutism.

Laser can reduce that hair, and coarse, dark hair usually responds well. But the hormones keep working, so new hair can grow over time. Many women with PCOS need touch-up sessions after the first series.

Laser treats the hair, not the cause. Many women also see a doctor, who may suggest medicine for the hormones. The two can work together. Tell your provider about PCOS and any medicines at the consult.

Underarm, bikini and leg hair

Underarms, the bikini line and the lower legs are the most common body areas. Fewer razor bumps and ingrown hairs is a common reason people start.

You can start with one area and add more later. See laser hair removal areas and visit times.

It can be safe, with the right settings. Your provider checks your skin type at the consult and sets the laser for it. Tell them about any recent sun or tanning.

When new hair needs a doctor

  • Hair that shows up quickly on the chin, chest or back
  • New hair along with irregular periods, acne or thinning hair on your scalp
  • A deeper voice or other sudden changes

A doctor can check for a hormone cause. Laser can still treat the hair, and many women do both. If your scalp hair is thinning too, see thinning hair.

What a laser series looks like

  1. 1
    Consult

Your provider looks at your skin and hair, asks about medicines and sun, and sets the plan.

  2. 2
    Shave the area

Shave 24 hours before. No waxing or plucking for four weeks before.

  3. 3
    The session

Goggles on. Most people describe a quick snap of heat, like a rubber band.

  4. 4
    Between sessions

Treated hair sheds over one to three weeks. The next session is four to eight weeks later.

Consult first. Walk-ins welcome.

Start with one area. Send the form, and the front desk calls or texts you back.

“So clean and professional they’ll tell you what you need and what you don’t need.”

Questions

Unwanted hair questions

How do I get rid of chin hair for good?

Laser hair removal is the long-term option for chin hair. It takes a series, and hormones can grow new hair later, so touch-ups are common. Shave between sessions instead of plucking.

Laser or electrolysis for facial hair?

Laser treats many hairs at once and works best on dark hair. Electrolysis treats one hair at a time and works on any color, including gray and blonde. Some people use laser for most of the hair and electrolysis for the light hairs left.

Why am I more hairy after laser?

Usually it is shedding. Treated hair pushes out over one to three weeks, which can look like regrowth. Hormone changes can also bring new hair, so tell your provider if you notice more.
