How to reduce lip filler swelling
- Hold a wrapped cold pack on your lips for about 10 minutes at a time on the first day.
- Sleep on your back with your head raised for the first two nights.
- Go easy on salt and alcohol for a couple of days.
- Skip hard workouts, saunas and hot yoga for a day or two.
- Don't press or squeeze your lips unless your injector tells you to.
Your injector may give you different steps. Follow theirs first.
Normal swelling or a reason to call?
| What you notice | Usually normal | Call us |
|---|---|---|
| Swelling | Even on both lips, peaks around day 2 or 3 | Severe, spreading, or getting worse after day 3 |
| Bruising | Small spots that fade within about a week | Large or spreading bruises |
| Color | Pink or a little red | White, gray or blue patches, or a lacy pattern |
| Pain | Tender to the touch | Strong pain that gets worse instead of better |
| Bumps | Small firm spots that soften over two weeks | Hard, hot or painful lumps, or blisters |
If you get cold sores, tell your injector before treatment. A tingle or blister after filler can be a cold sore flare.

Rare signs that need care right away
Call us at (708) 529-7655 right away, or get emergency care, if the skin on or around your lips turns white, gray or blue. Do the same if pain gets worse instead of better.
These can be signs of a blocked blood vessel. It is rare, and it needs fast treatment.

Why is one side of my lip more swollen?
Swelling is rarely even. The side with more injections, or the side you sleep on, can look bigger for a few days. Small firm spots are usually swelling around the gel.
Judge the shape at two weeks, not before. If something still looks uneven then, ask your injector to check it.

Questions
Lip filler swelling questions
Why are my lips more swollen in the morning?
Fluid collects in the face while you lie flat at night. So swelling is usually worst when you wake up and eases through the day. Sleeping with your head raised helps.
Is it normal for lip filler to feel lumpy?
In the first days, yes. Swelling around the gel can feel like small firm spots, and they usually soften over one to two weeks. If a lump is hard, hot or painful, or still there at two weeks, have your injector check it.
When will my lip filler look normal?
Most people feel fine going out by day three to five. The final shape shows at about two weeks. So book at least two weeks before a wedding or photos.
Can I drink alcohol after lip filler?
Skip it for the first day or two. Alcohol can add to swelling and bruising.
How long does bruising from lip filler last?
Small bruises usually fade within about a week, turning yellow before they go. Concealer can cover them after the first day.
