Microneedling vs Chemical Peel: Which One First?

Smoother texture, fewer marks.

Microneedling works on scars and texture below the surface. A chemical peel works on spots, tone and breakouts from the top down. Here is how to choose, and when a plan uses both.

Is microneedling or a chemical peel better?

Microneedling makes tiny channels in the skin to prompt repair, so it suits acne scars, texture and fine lines. A chemical peel removes the outer layer with acid, so it suits dark spots, dull tone and breakouts. At Magic FemTouch MedSpa in Oak Lawn, your provider can plan one, or both spaced weeks apart.

When microneedling fits

Microneedling suits skin with dents and texture: pitted acne scars, rough patches, and pores that look larger than they used to. It works on the structure below the surface.

It takes a series, and each session means a day or two of pink skin. See microneedling in Oak Lawn, or what sets the cost of microneedling.

When a chemical peel fits

A peel suits color and surface problems: sun spots, patchy tone, dullness and active breakouts. Our menu has peels of different strengths. A salicylic peel is made for acne-prone skin, and a lactic peel for sensitive skin.

Light peels flake for a few days. See chemical peels in Oak Lawn for the types, or VI Peel for a stronger option.

The days after each one

Aftercare for microneedling is in our microneedling aftercare guide.

  1. 1
    Day 1

Microneedled skin is pink, like a mild sunburn. Peeled skin looks normal or a little pink.

  2. 2
    Days 2 and 3

Microneedling pink fades. A peel starts to feel tight and may begin to flake.

  3. 3
    Days 4 to 7

Flaking ends for most light peels. Do not pick at it.

  4. 4

Time for the next session of either one, if you are doing a series.

Using microneedling and peels together

Acne often leaves both kinds of marks: dents and dark spots. A plan can alternate the two. Microneedling works on the dents, and peels work on the marks.

They are not done in the same week. Your provider spaces them so your skin settles in between.

Tell your provider if you use retinoids or acne medicine, or took an acne pill in the last six months. Stay out of the sun and wear sunscreen after either one.

Questions

Microneedling and chemical peel questions

Can I get microneedling and a chemical peel on the same day?

Not usually. Doing both at once raises the chance of irritation. Most plans space them weeks apart, and your provider sets the order and the gap.

Which is better for acne scars, microneedling or a peel?

For pitted or dented scars, microneedling usually does more, because it works below the surface. For flat brown or red marks, a peel often works well. Many people have both kinds, so plans often use both.

Which has less downtime, microneedling or a chemical peel?

A light peel usually has the least: some flaking for a few days. Microneedling means a day or two of pink skin. A stronger peel can mean about a week of peeling.

Is microneedling or a peel better for dark skin?

Both can suit darker skin when they are chosen and done with care. Darker skin is more likely to form dark patches after irritation. Your provider checks your skin type before suggesting either.

How often can I get microneedling or a chemical peel?

Microneedling is usually done every few weeks during a series. Light peels can be repeated every few weeks, stronger peels less often. Your provider sets the schedule by how your skin responds.
